Must win situation for Warriors on June 6

How many sportsmen get to play in a stadium named after them?

Not many.

However, Trinidad and Tobago’s football captain Dwight Yorke will be an exception when the country’s 2010 World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica on June 6 originally scheduled for the Hasely Crawford stadium will take place at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago at 6 pm.

After consultation among the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF), the National Team Technical Staff and the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), TTFF special adviser, Austin Jack Warner announced that a decision had been made to move the match to Tobago.

It was agreed that Tobago is part of Trinidad & Tobago and that it is only fair that Tobago be given the chance to host a match.

Warner has been quoted as saying, “It is being done in the national interest. We will also make plans to ensure that as much Trinidadians be given the opportunity to be in the Sister Isle for the match.”

The Dwight Yorke stadium seats 7,500 some 15,000 less than the Hasely Crawford Stadium and it therefore means that TTFF stand to make a financial loss but agrees that Tobago should be given the honour of hosting the event.

Ticket prices have also been reduced for the match with the covered area fetching a price of $400 down from $500 while the uncovered area will cost $200.

Warner also further stated that invitations have been extended to President George Maxwell Richards, Prime Minister Patrick Manning, Minister of Sport Gary Hunt and Tobago House of Assembly Chief Secretary Orville London for this must win match.

The Soca Warriors need a victory to stand any realistic chance of staying in contention to qualify for South Africa.
