Keeping up with Mr Jones

Kenwyne Jones

Kenwyne Jones

One year ago Sunderland turned down a`15 million pound offer for Kenwyne Jones. Now they are probably prepared to offload him for much less.

Is Kenwyne Jones’ job on the line?

The January transfer window is days away and there is constant speculation that Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is unhappy with his striker: he is simply not producing.

He did score his first goal in two months in the pulsating 4-3 loss against Manchester City the Saturday before Christmas and yesterday in the drawn game with Everton he provided Darren Bent with the pass for Sunderland’s opening goal in the 17th minute.

Jones is a bustling striker who runs at the defence but the tall powerfully built forward simply does not produce the goods often enough.

He has scored only six goals this season although he can point to the fact that he was sidelined for several weeks with injury.

He hasn’t helped the Soca Warriors in the immemorable World Cup campaign and more and more he appears to be the football version of a Carl Hooper- plenty talent, poor results.

Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs are said to be interested in Jones and it is left to be seen if Bruce with a striker who refused to sell for 15 million pounds last year. They will probably sell for less next month.

Jones has another chance at redemption when the team plays aghainst Blackburn Rovers tomorrow.

“You have to move on in football from one game to the nest”, the laid back striker from South Trinidad says.
