Will Deryck Murray be bowled out today?

The Trinidad and Tobago cricket team have taken the world by storm. They have put the country on the map with their sparkling performances. It so happens that there are people who want to boot out the administrators who have played a telling role in the team’s success over the past four years.

When the Queen’s Park Cricket Club ran local cricket as the body that administered the affairs of the then Trinidad Cricket Council, Sir Errol Dos Santos was acknowledged as the leader of pack.

No dog dared bark and annual elections were held without any negative publicity in the press.

Today, Deryck Lance Murray, a Queen’s Park prince who was groomed to follow in Sir Errol’s footsteps, is not only being challenged at the cricket board’s elections but vilified in the newspapers as well for alleged maladministration, over-spending and other such misdeeds.

Deryck, who has had a distinguished international career as a member of the all- conquering West Indies team of the 1970s, is now facing the fight of his life against a group calling themselves “Movement For Change” which can boast of a couple of opposition politicians among its membership.

There are also some turncoats, including one Azim Bassarath who is seeking the presidency.

There have been charges and counter-charges in the newspapers as both sides try their best to launder their dirty cricket tunics in the full glare of the public.

While all of this not so delicious bacchanal has been taking place, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket team has astounded the cricket world with its exhilarating cricket at the recent Airtel Champions of Champions tournament in India.

Captain Daren Ganga and his men have brought glory to this country and by extension the West In dies.

Under Murray’s administration, the cricketers won the championship after a 20-year drought and have dominated One-Day and 20/20 cricket.

Bassarath and company apparently view this as failure and it will be interesting to see how the 49 delegates at today’s meeting which will be held at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, will vote.

The Tntinsider will bring you the latest score.
