Warriors chase a miracle
The Trinidad and Tobago football team must defeat the United States to have the faintest hope of a playoff spot against a South American team. The reality is, however, that the World Cup dream is all but over.
There is a lot of brave talk from the Trinidad and Tobago team ahead of tonight’s crucial Concacaf World Cup qualifying football game against the United States.
“The Soca Warriors will not go down without a fight”, says coach Russell Latapy.
“We are going to give 115 per cent” are the fighting words of captain Dennis Lawrence.
The reality is that the Soca Warriors after their disastrous performance in Honduras on Saturday are all but out of contention for a place in the World Cup finals in South Africa next year and must defeat the United States to have even a glimmer of hope of a playoff spot against a fifth placed South American team. A tall order from this vantage point.
A draw against the speedy Americans will not do: the Soca Warriors, at the bottom of the six-team table with a mere five points must defeat the Americans and hope to win next month at home against the resurgent Mexicans and away against Costa Rica and hope the four leading teams draw or lose their remaining games,
It is crazy mathematics that would confound any scientist. But in sport very strange things do occur and a miracle sometimes is always at hand.
However, the Soca Warriors have home advantage and must play for pride against an uptight American team which cannot afford to lose or draw at this stage,
The United States are second on the table with 13 points the same number as leaders, Honduras but with a lesser goal difference. Mexico and Costa Rica each have 12 points. It is therefore a tight battle for the three automatic qualifying places.
The game starts at 7:10p.m.
