Gazette Paper Probe
UDECOTT has been behaving as though it has a lot of cocoa in the sun. It should be happy about this latest boo boo.
The conspiracy theorists will see foul play in the aborted Uff Commission of Enquiry into the Construction Sector and UDECOTT.
To Attorney General John Jeremie “it is very embarrassing….it was a basic error and should now have taken place”.
UDECOTT, which has been suspiciously intransigent all along, refusing to cooperate with the Commission from the start, threatening legal action and so on, has some more breathing space if it has not been completely left off the hook after some rather damaging allegations of nepotism and corruption.
The AG has been quoted as saying that he is contemplating some form of action- to do what should have been done in the first place by gazetting the inquiry or if that cannot work, bringing a validation bill to Parliament.
However, the damage has been done and Prime Minister, who all along has given high marks to UDECOTT and its Chairman Calder Hart, may have to jump into the issue if only for the fact that he started the ball rolling when he announced the inquiry in Parliament one year ago.
In these hard times and with UDECOTT still in charge of projects involving billion of dollars of taxpayers’ dollars, there needs to be action now.
Professor John Uff has indicated that he would be submitting the first part of his report in four to six weeks and the final part a month later, but the investigation into UDECOTT should not end there. The probe must continue.
