No action on UNC/A rebels
The United National Congress/Alliance (UNCA) drama continued on Sunday with the retreat it held at its Rienzi Complex headquarters giving notice that maverick MPs Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, Jack Warner and Winston “Gypsy” Peters could be disciplined.
There were no fireworks and it was decided that when the national executive meets next week it will discuss the matter with the possibility of it being referred to the party’s disciplinary committee.
Ramesh left the meeting early and said afterwards that the party’s membership was “talking a different language” to that of the leadership and he would continue taking the issue of change and succession to members.
Ramesh, Warner and Peters have been holding meetings in the party strongholds for several weeks dealing with the issue.
The trio has not endeared themselves to Political Leader Basdeo Panday who has hinted at possible expulsion and other dire political consequences.
Several polls have indicated that Panday is losing popularity and should give way to a successor with Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar being the front-runner for his job.
St Augustine MP Vasant Bharath discounted the possibility of internal party elections before the Local General elections which he felt would take place in July.
