Local Govt.debate today

There are 121 Local Government representatives. Can you name five?

Local Government elections are constitutionally due next week Monday.

That won’t happen and the Government will postpone it for the fourth successive year-to heaven knows when.

This will be the bone of contention when the House of Representatives debate Local Government reform today.

On Friday, Local Government Minister Senator Hazel Manning laid a White Paper on Local Government reform which proposed the reduction of municipalities from 14 to 12, including making Chaguanas and Arima cities, the creation of executive councils and also a boundary review report.

Clearly, the scope of these proposals will clearly involve the postponement of Local Elections to probably next year.

More on this tomorrow.
