Swine flu alert

There are pictures of people arriving at Piarco International airport wearing surgical masks.

One can’t quite comprehend whether this is a new fashion statement from copycat Trinis or whether they have been to Mexico where the swine flu pandemic is in full flight, killing a reported 86 persons with a total of 1,400 sick from the virus.

Reports are that there are now cases in Europe and some health officials there are advising people not to travel to the United States, Canada and Mexico.

There have also been cases reported in New Zealand.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that there are no reported cases in Trinidad and Tobago but the Ministry is taking no chances and medical teams are screening visitors at points of entry.

The Ministry will be announcing further preventive steps today.

Meanwhile, it could not be ascertained whether there was a drop in the sale of pork and pork products.

A couple of years ago, chicken sales dropped when the avian bird flu surfaced in Asia and Europe.
