Riot police beat Property Tax protestors outside Parliament

Protesters were beaten by riot police and People’s Democracy leader David Abdulah was arrested today during a peaceful demonstration outside Parliament this afternoon.

Television cameras showed police beating demonstrators who were protesting against the Property Tax which is currently being debated in the House of Representatives.

Abdulah was taken away by police to Police Headquarters nearby and charged with obstructing the free passageway. He was released two hours later on personal bail of $500 and has been asked to appear in court on Monday.

The demonstration continued after Abdulah was arrested with people chanting and clapping.

Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) President General Ancil Roget, who was in the demonstration, insisted that they were not breaking any law.

Abdulah said he had written to both the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate to postpone debate of the controversial bill which seeks to impose steep increases in property tax.
