12 bus workers fired

PTSC decides to fire 12 workers on Wednesday night. Other workers say this will cost the company dearly.

Some 12 bus workers, including the branch president of the Transport and Industrial Workers Union(TIWU) which represents workers of the Public Transport Service Corporation(PTSC) were given termination letters yesterday.

According to an informed source, after a top level management meeting, the decision was made to fire the workers.

He said that this latest turn of events would cause a major disruption in the PTSC’s service.

The workers are very upset because the branch president, who they PTSC management feared, was fired.

“We are not taking this so, all hell will break loose,” one worker vowed.

The branch president Brian Johnson was among the 12 workers fired by the PTSC this evening September 23,” he said.

The PTSC workers, mainly drivers refused to drive buses because of several industrial relation issues.

This caused a major problem with commuters, but some workers decided to resume work.

Eventually the entire work force returned to work. Now that this current episode has unfolded, the workers are saying that this latest move will cost the PTSC dearly, and by extension the Government.

If PTSC’s management team was as zealous about managing schedules and avoiding trip cancellations and delays as they are about firing workers who dare stand up for their rights, then we would have something that approaches an acceptable level of bus “service” in this country. As it stands thousands of commuters can testify daily about PTSC’s incompetence as a public service provider.
