T&T cries for Michael Jackson

Television ratings went up yesterday. People skipped work to view the Los Angeles memorial for Michael Jackson.

Trinidad and Tobago, literally, stood still yesterday afternoon-like most places around the world as the memorial for “The King of Pop” Michael Jackson took place at the Staple Centre, Los Angeles.

People stayed at home-to look, teary-eyed, at the moving ceremony on television. In downtown Port of Spain, there was a huge television screen at the top of a building housing a fast food restaurant which could be viewed on the Brian Lara Promenade.

Bars and restaurants with television sets did a roaring business with people crying into their drinks. “My uncle has been a Michael Jackson fan for over 25 years and he must be crying like a baby at home”, one attractive young woman said.

Condolence books which people can sign have been organised by Belgroves Funeral Home and Khan’s Bookstore.

A white female American visitor said on local television that she was amazed at the level of popularity Michael Jackson had in this country
