Political office first.

Now it’s time for charity.

Jack Warner having achieved his goal of becoming chairman of the Opposition United National Congress (UNC) and assisting in removing Basdeo Panday as political leader, has decided to turn his attention to more humanitarian pursuits- for instance, the plight of the Haitian people.

In a television interview this morning, Warner, who was elected UNC chairman yesterday, said in a matter of fact manner: “I didn’t want to leave here and lose a day or two in campaigning.”

He promised to get FIFA to help and to use his connections in the US State Department and the Dominican Republic to assist in his relief drive.

Warner, who is FIFA’s third vice-president, announced that he would be leaving for Haiti on Wednesday and revealed that some 13 members of the Haitian Football Federation had perished in the January 12 earthquake.

The Haitian Government has revealed that some 150,000 persons, including United Nations personnel had died in the worst natural disaster that troubled country has experienced.
