Help from TT for Haiti
While Caricom politicians spoke yesterday about travelling to earthquake-ravaged Haiti to get a first hand view of the devastation, this country has already pledged millions of dollars in assistance.
Prime Minister Patrick Manning said that the Government will be providing US $1 million in assistance; Digicel will be giving US$5 million and RBC US $100,000.
Cash donations began flowing into Republic Bank and the Red Cross and the McAl Group began accepting foodstuff, clothing, cash etc. to take to Haiti as these organisations made appeals to the public.
It is understood that a special concert is being planned to raise money for the aid effort.
Prime Minister Manning indicated that ‘while things are very tight financially” there will be other assistance.
