Will Chalkie beat Sparrow’s record at the calypso competition tonight? The one tune wonder will certainly try.

After the, noisy mind-numbing Soca Monarch competition on Friday, traditional calypso will be centre stage at the Dimanche Gras show tonight at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

Defending calypso king Chalkdust, a veteran of 43 years, will attempt to break the Mighty Sparrow’s record by winning the crown for a record ninth time.

Always the man for the big occasion with clever lyrics, though not necessarily providing a new melody, it certainly will not easy for Chalkie who will be contending with 14 calypsonians, which includes the likes of De Fosto Himself who broke down Skinner Park with a scorching political commentary, In A Palace State of Mind; Nicole Greaves Where The Lions Are; Brian London A Calypsonian; Singing Sandra No Child Shall Be Left Behind; and Mistah Shak Rogue.

This edition of the calypso monarch competition should be an enthralling one with the singer who holds his or her nerves and gives a flawless performance standing an excellent chance of winning.

The show should also dazzle with the finals of the kings and queens. Dimanche Gras 2010 will be produced by playwright Davlin Thomas and is entitle El Cerro Del Aripo with a cast of over 200 showcasing the country’s culture. It starts at 5:45 p.m.
